If you read my recent Tantus Plunge review, you’ll know I have a thing for multi-purpose sex toys. Toys that, with the flip of the wrist, can change from an object of pain to an object of pleasure. For that reason alone, I’ve had my eye on the Icicles No 38 Glass Dildo with Leather Cat-O-Nine Tails for quite some time. Now, thanks to the fabulous Uberkinky, I have one in my clutches. Well, the Fella’s clutches, but you know what I mean.
In reality, Pipedream are more nightmare than dream, but they do have a few lines that can’t be ignored. One of those lines, is Icicles. Glass pleasure objects that cater for all tastes, most size preferences, and all orifices.
Their packaging, while glaringly obvious, is pretty and sophisticated. So much so, it’s difficult to throw them away. There won’t be many people keeping them on the wall shelves in plain sight, though. I do tend to keep my Icicles stuff in their boxes, but they’re in the cupboard out of the way.
Inside of the lovely box, in a foam insert, sits the Icicles No 38. It’s a dildo flogger hybrid that ticks all but two boxes for me. Which ones? Read on and find out…
The Dildo
There’s a good chance that, in terms of girth, this is the biggest glass dildo I have. The shaft is 4” in circumference and the bulb on the tip measures up at 5”. Add 6.5” of insertable length to that and you have quite a substantial piece of glass. That sizing probably wouldn’t feel like anything out of the ordinary if the dildo was silicone. But being glass it’s solid and unyielding, so feels bigger than it really is. There’s a box ticked right there.
The bulbous tip is completely smooth, but the shaft is a different story altogether. Every inch is covered in deep waves, giving it one of the boldest textures I’ve seen in a glass toy. They run lengthways down the shaft and are approximately half a centimetre deep. Tick!
To be honest, the only box the dildo doesn’t tick for me is the curve box. The shaft is ramrod straight, so even though it has a tip that should be made for g-spotting, it is quite a chore to actually get it positioned to properly stimulate it. It’s possible, but there are other toys out there that do it so much better and with half the work.
If I’m using it alone – which I’ve only done for the sake of testing, truth be told – I prefer to use it as a thruster. Plunging deep and twisting slowly feels incredible. On top of that, the bulb offers a lovely deep pounding sensation which I can feel in my belly for hours after it’s over. The Fella gets a better angle so he manages to hit my g-spot with relative ease, but it’s never gonna be a favourite for that.
The Flogger
Twenty three 18” strips make up the falls. Made from super soft black suede, they’re gentle on the skin until the wielder decides they no longer what them to be. It’s not a heavy flogger by any means, but the falls are heavy enough to let you know when the game changes from soft to hard.
I like long floggers. They cover larger surfaces, so whether it’s a tickle or a whack, the stimulation is broader. That does mean it stings less, but repetitive strikes have the ability to build up a nice burn that then makes each lash feel more than it really is.
My second issue with the Icicles No 38 is one of quality and build. The falls seem to shed bits of fibre and crap all day long, and the place where the two pieces meet? It’s wrapped in leather. Thin leather that’s been coiled around the glass to hide the join. During its first use I managed to separate the coil and set the end away to peeling. That happened because that’s where a solo user holds the toy.
I honestly don’t see that leather strip lasting if I keep using it on my own, it’s just going to peel away. The falls seem to be held on by that leather strip too, so when it happens I’ll be left with a still fab dildo and a useless, massive suede tassel. I don’t know if it could have been done better, but then I’m not a sex toy designer. It kinda feels like whoever designed it cut a corner there.
The Icicles No 38 – in use
As with the other switchy pieces we have, the No 38 feels great when used for its intended purpose, but there are drawbacks. Swapping from flogger to dildo and then back again can make the falls a little bit grungy and disgusting. Even if you don’t switch back and forth, the flogger is still a pain in the arse to keep clean cos fluids travel. I’ve sat and cleaned each frond individually to make sure all of the yuck is gone more than once.
Because of that we tend to use the flogger as a basic flogger and the dildo as a playful piece. Shallow, teasing penetration with the flogger kept right out of the way seems to be the best way to keep the No 38 in tip top condition. That does take some of the shine off it for me, but I do still rate it quite highly, purely because of how good the dildo feels.
