Happy Earth Day, folks! I really should have brought you this review before now, but I couldn’t resist hanging on until Earth Day. Why? Because the Blush Novelties Gaia Eco – named after the primordial Greek ‘Mother Earth’ goddess – is (as far as I know) the world’s first biodegradable vibrator.
It’s made of BioFeel – which according to the packaging is “a starch-based bioplastic, a polymer compound material mixed with corn starch.” I’ve had cups made of this stuff before, and pet bowls and one dinner tray. But the Gaia is the first sex toy I’ve ever seen made from this material.
Regular plastics are petroleum based and contain a fuck ton of chemicals. They take a lot of energy to produce, and one of the costs of that production is greenhouse gas emissions. But BioFeel is much kinder in its production. Less energy is used for a start, and there are fewer greenhouse gases produced by a Blush Novelties Gaia vibe than there is with your average plastic water bottle.
And, unlike plastic, BioFeel is commercially compostable. Biodegradable means it will break down into organic materials…eventually. Biocompostable means it will break down into organic materials at the same rate as paper. Gone in a flash and ready to give back to the Earth in the space of a couple of months.
I know, I know. Realistically speaking, most of us don’t ever consider (or really care about) the fact that even our cheapest sex toys literally cost the Earth. It’s not something I’ve ever considered before. But, for some folks, reducing the impact of their existence on the planet is an integral part of their lifestyle, and I’m actually really impressed that there’s a company out there representing them.
So, the bit most of us do care about has arrived.
When it comes to design, the Blush Novelties Gaia Eco Vibrator is as simple as they come. It’s what would usually be considered to be a classic vibe. Something your granny would recognise as a vibrator if she spotted it in a magazine or in your top drawer.
Measuring up at 7” in total length, it has a rounded, softly tapered tip and a completely straight, smooth shaft. It definitely looks and feels like regular plastic but rather than being super shiny (like ABS usually is) it’s almost matte. This doesn’t make it draggy, though. It glides perfectly well over dry skin and wet genitals.
As with many classic vibrators, the Gaia is quite slender. At its widest point around the base, it’s just 3.5” in circumference. Around the top, it’s about 3.25”. This would make it a great first vibe choice. The smooth straightness of it would make it a good option for folks who don’t like, want, or find it difficult to use textured, curved, or girthy vibes.
The Blush Novelties Gaia is a battery-powered vibrator. Not as environmentally friendly now, is it? Well, if you use rechargeable batteries it is, but if you don’t you’re gonna be sending loads of AAs to landfill cos it needs two of them to work. To get at the battery housing you need to twist off the end. Once it’s back on, that end becomes your twisty vibe control.
I hold my hands up and admit that I totally expected this vibe to be as limp as a bit of week-old lettuce. I mean, it’s $11.99 and it’s run on two weeny batteries. It has a twisty end control and in my experience, they’re shite nine times out of ten.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I turned it on and realised that, while it isn’t gonna shake my bones to the marrow, it’s actually a pretty decent vibrator. When I hold a high-frequency vibe against the tip of my nose my eyes water and I want to sneeze. I feel low-frequency vibes behind my eyes and in my mouth. The Gaia? Low frequency.
That first test had it going straight from my nose to my nipples. Then from my nipples to my knickers. I held it over the fabric for a while until I got mad at myself for messing about, then a couple of minutes of direct contact with my clit brought me my orgasm. And it was a fucking good one.
I can’t even begin to tell you how shocked I was. I’m used to my We-Vibe, L’Amourose, and Doxy being the pleasure bringers, so to have such a lovely orgasm form an $11.99 toy was pretty amazing.
I have a small set of plastic drawers on my bedside table which is mainly there for toy charging purposes. But when it’s not in use for that, I stick overspill toys in it. Toys that don’t fit in my poor overstuffed drawer. The Blush Novelties Gaia lives in one of those plastic drawers and I often reach for it when playing with the Fella.
We can’t use it anally cos it isn’t suitable for it, but I do use it to tease his butt. I love the way it makes him squirm for me. I also love that he uses it for penetration instead of (sometimes with) his fingers when he gives me oral. It makes me come. It makes him come, and I don’t think anyone could ask for more than that.
